January 5th - Today is the 5th day of the year, with only 360 days remaining in 2006.
National
Bird Day
"National Bird Day" is not only a good day to take time to appreciate the
native wild birds flying free outside our windows, it is also a perfect time
to reflect on how we treat the native birds of other countries. While we have
enacted laws to protect our native birds — such as blue jays, cardinals, and
crows — from commercial exploitation, we fail to recognize the inconsistency
in allowing the pet industry to exploit the birds of other countries.

BANDING TAGS
Who says people from Arkansas can't follow directions ... According to the
Knight-Ridder News Service, the inscription on the metal bands used by the
U.S. Department of the Interior to tag migratory birds has been changed. The
bands used to bear the address of the Washington Biological Survey,
abbreviated "Wash. Biol. Surv." until the agency received the following
letter from an Arkansas camper:
Dear Sirs:
While camping last week I shot one of your birds. I think it was a kind of
crow. I followed the cooking instructions on the leg tag and I want to tell
you it was horrible.
The bands are now marked, "Fish and Wildlife Service."

There's an unseen force which lets birds know when you've just washed your
car. - Denis Norden
