MEDICAL ADVICE AND MYTHS
Dr. J.J. Cohen, a professor of immunology at the University of Colorado
Health Sciences Center, was recently interviewed for a newspaper article
debunking those "health myths" we all learned from our parents.
EG: Don't eat anything that's been on the ground for more than 30 seconds.
Dr. Larry Wolk, CIGNA HealthCare medical director, says, "You do risk picking
up certain things, like animal feces and dirt, that carry parasites. There is
the potential that it can make you sick."
Cohen noted that he had always heard if it had been on the ground less than
30 seconds, it was OK to eat. He admits there's no science to the 30-second
rule, and offers up his own rule: "If you drop your broccoli on the floor,
then you shouldn't eat it. It would probably be dangerous. But if you drop
your Snickers bar, go ahead."
